How to Become a Real Estate Appraiser in Maryland

The Maryland Commission of Real Estate Appraisers certifies, licenses and registers real estate appraisers to perform real estate appraisals. You must get the Trainee Real Property Appraiser License to obtain the experience hours that qualify you to take the test for state licensed, certified, and certified general licenses.

Maryland Appraiser Trainee

Basic Requirements:Must be 18 years or older and submit a completed application
Training Requirements: None
Education Requirements: 72 hours of qualifying education course
Fee: $150.00
State Required Test: No

Maryland Licensed Real Estate Appraiser

Basic Requirements:Must be 18 years or older and submit a completed application
Training Requirements: 2,000 hours of experience in no fewer than 24 months
Education Requirements: Must have an associate’s degree or higher from an accredited college, junior college, or community college or 30 semester credit hours of college-level education from an accredited college, junior college, community college or university; complete 150 hours of qualifying education courses
Fee: $250.00 + $120.00 National Registry Fee
State Required Test: Yes

Maryland Certified Residential Real Estate Appraiser

Basic Requirements:Must be 18 years or older and submit a completed application
Training Requirements: 2,500 hours of experience in no fewer than 24 months
Education Requirements: Must have a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university; complete 200 hours of qualifying education courses
Fee: $250.00 + $120.00 National Registry Fee
State Required Test: Yes

Maryland Certified General Real Estate Appraiser

Basic Requirements:Must be 18 years or older and submit a completed application
Training Requirements: 3,000 hours of experience in no fewer than 30 months, 1500 of these hours must be in non-residential experience
Education Requirements: Must have a Bachelor’s degree or higher; complete 300 hours of qualifying education courses
Fee: $250.00 + $120.00 National Registry Fee
State Required Test: Yes
