How to Become a Real Estate Appraiser in Michigan

The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs handles the certification, licensing and registering of real estate appraisers to perform real estate appraisals. You must get the Limited Appraiser License to obtain the experience hours that qualify you to take the test for the state license, certified, and certified general licenses. The required time to gain experience hours for licensing is just 12 months, whereas many other states impose a minimum time of 24 months.

Michigan Limited Appraiser License

Basic Requirements: Must be 18 years or older and submit a completed application
Training Requirements: None
Education Requirements: 75 hours of qualifying education courses
Fee: $160.00
State Required Test: No

Michigan State Licensed Appraiser License

Basic Requirements: Must be 18 years or older and submit a completed application
Training Requirements: 2,000 hours of experience in no fewer than 12 months. 1,500 of these hours must be in residential experience.
Education Requirements: Must hold an Associate’s degree OR 30 semester hours; 150 hours of qualifying education courses
Fee: $175.00
State Required Test: Yes

Michigan Certified Residential Appraiser License

Basic Requirements: Must be 18 years or older and submit a completed application
Training Requirements: 2,500 hours in no fewer than 24 months. 2,000 hours must be in residential experience
Education Requirements: Must have a Bachelor’s degree; 200 hours of qualifying education courses
Fee: $175.00
State Required Test: Yes

Michigan Certified General Appraiser License

Basic Requirements: Must be 18 years or older and submit a completed application
Training Requirements: 3,000 hours of experience in no fewer than 30 months. 1,500 of these hours must be in non-residential experience
Education Requirements: Must have a Bachelor’s degree; 300 hours of qualifying education courses
Fee: $175.00
State Required Test: Yes
